Seasonal Sawyer Crew Leader



Essential Functions:

Supervision & Management

• Responsible for safety enforcement of the entire crew.

• Provides daily supervision of the members of his/her crew on weed eradication projects using chainsaws and wood chippers. This includes assigning, leading and instructing work tasks and training Corpsmembers in the development of job skills.

• Teaches Corpsmembers a variety of work skills in conjunction with technical assistance providers.

• Ensure the proper use and handling of all hand tools, power tools, and equipment.

• Assist in personal and vocational counseling, and in the leadership development of Corpsmembers.

• Promotes and maintains positive group morale.

• Enforces the code of conduct, discipline polices and program procedures outlined in the employee handbooks at all times.

• Reports to the AmeriCorps Program Coordinator.

Work Project Implementation

• Lead a crew on chainsaw projects for the duration of the term.

• Maintains a safe work environment.

• Oversees chainsaw operation and maintenance, and tree felling and bucking.

• Assists the MHYC staff with the set-up of work projects including the estimation of time and materials needed for work projects.

• Oversees and implements a variety of conservation and community service projects for his/her team.

• Distributes work among Corpsmembers and maintains even workflow.

• Serves as a liaison and on-site contact with project sponsors.

• Ensures the timely and quality completion of work projects.

• Completes all project completion reports and project evaluations in a timely manner.

Corpsmember Development & Education

• Promotes individual learning, leadership and personal growth among Corpsmembers.

• Assists in the development of educational components to service projects.

• Facilitates environmental education and leadership activities.

• May be asked to participate in a service project for Make a Difference Day.

Administrative Duties

• Oversees the general case management of Corpsmembers.

• Monitors, documents and evaluates the participants’ progress in the program.

• Maintains thorough records on each Corpsmember throughout the length of the program, including daily attendance and time records.

• Keep track of all tools and equipment used on the job on a daily basis.

• Maintains complete and accurate files and employment paperwork for Corpsmembers.

• Assists other staff with the reporting required for funders and board members.

• Attend staff meetings and crew leader team meetings.

• Other duties may be assigned as necessary.



Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or equivalent is required. Two years of college or vocational training is preferred. Professional experience in a related field may be substituted for post-secondary education.

Experience: At least one year of working with a diverse population of youth. Chainsaw and/or forestry experience preferred. There will be a professional chainsaw training from August 20-22.



Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Ability to motivate and discipline others, communicate effectively, and explain and demonstrate safe work practices.

• Commitment to help young people succeed in an innovative training program, to reorient their lives, nurture their leadership skills, and enable them to make a difference in their community.

• Ability to organize and direct a crew of young people on sawyer projects.

• Ability to meet deadlines, prepare accurate records and reports.

• Valid driver’s license with good driving record and ability to drive a 12-passenger van to and from work-sites.

• Must be able to lift 50 lbs., spend 8 hours a day outdoors and hike 2 miles with a day-pack

• Ability to use hand and power tools (chainsaw training is provided).

• Knowledge of Denver Metro Area preferred.



HOURS & COMPENSATION

This is a full-time seasonal exempt position from August 20th, 2007 through October 19th, 2007 with an hourly wage of $12.50. There are no health benefits for this position. Hours are Monday through Thursday 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. There are three paid days of orientation on Wednesday, August 15th through Friday, August 17th.
